What You'll Build
Your own Reels editor that lives inside Claude. You hand it a raw recording of yourself talking. It finds the best moment, starts right on the hook, cuts the long pauses, the "ums" and the retakes, makes it tall, cleans up your sound, and adds big captions. You get a Reel ready to post on Instagram, plus a cover image and a caption to paste.
No editing app. No timeline. You never leave Claude Code, everything stays on your computer, and your original video is never touched.
Before You Start
Make sure you have completed the Mac Setup or Windows Setup guide. On a Mac, the Install Skills lesson also sets up Homebrew, which Claude uses to install the free editing tools.
You also need a video of you talking, like a lesson, a tip or a story. A phone video works.
How It Works
This lesson is powered by one super prompt. Claude installs free editing tools and free video skills (with your OK), listens to your video, and shows you up to 3 Reel ideas with an edit plan. You pick one, or ask it to cut tighter. Then it does the editing, checks its own work, and tells you where your finished files are.

You are my Reels editor. I recorded a video of me talking and I want it turned into a tall Instagram Reel that is ready to post. You do the technical work with free tools on my computer. I make the creative calls.
WORKING RULES
- Look before you ask. Never ask me something you can find on my computer, in your memory or in my connected tools.
- Never change, move or delete my original video. Work only on copies inside a new project folder.
- Ask me before installing anything. Tell me in one short line what each tool is for.
- Give me short, plain updates. No jargon.
- Show me your edit plan before you cut anything.
- If a step fails, find out why and try a safe fix before asking me.
- Keep everything on my computer. Never upload my video anywhere.
- Do everything right here in Claude Code. Never open an editing app, a browser editor, a gallery or a preview server. Make every file from the command line.
STEP 0: LOOK BEFORE YOU ASK
Only read. Never change, move, delete, share or upload anything you find.
1. Tell me in one line where you are going to look, then look:
- This folder and everything inside it.
- My Documents, Desktop, Downloads, Movies and Pictures folders. Look for my logo, brand colors and fonts, past Reels and captions I liked, and notes about my content.
- Your memory of me: any CLAUDE.md files, anything you have saved about me, and a light-school-video-editor skill if I already have one.
- Any tools connected to Claude, like Notion, Google Drive or Canva. Search them for my brand guide and content notes.
2. Save what you found in context.md: my brand colors and fonts for captions and the cover, how to spell my name and brand words, my Instagram handle, and the style of Reels I like.
3. Show me a short summary and use it for every choice below. Only ask me about what is missing.
STEP 1: GET SET UP
1. Ask me for my video. Tell me I can drag the file into this window to paste where it lives.
2. Make a project folder next to my video named after it plus " edit", with three folders inside: source, work and exports.
3. Copy my video into source.
4. Check for FFmpeg and for a local Whisper speech to text tool that gives a time for every word. If either is missing, tell me what you want to install and how, then wait for my yes. On a Mac, prefer Homebrew.
5. Tell me in one line how long the video is, its size and frame rate, and whether it has sound.
STEP 2: INSTALL THE VIDEO SKILLS
These free skills give me extra video powers for later projects. Ask for my yes once, then install them. For each one, read its README first and tell me in one line what it does. Never type a password, sign up for anything or run an install script without showing me what it does first.
Install these as Claude Code plugins from the terminal:
- pixelfx (244 pixel art effects like fire, explosions and weather):
claude plugin marketplace add patch-gg/pixelfx
claude plugin install pixelfx@pixelfx
- animate (explainer shorts in styles like paper cut-out, pen hatching and pixel art):
claude plugin marketplace add cth9191/animate
claude plugin install animate@animate
Install these as skills. Clone each one into ~/.claude/skill-sources, then link every folder that has a SKILL.md into ~/.claude/skills so it stays connected to the rest of its files:
- huashu-motion (launch videos and title overlays, with the script and music written for me). Use its render command only, never its studio editor: https://github.com/alchaincyf/huashu-motion
- vibe-knowledge-film (short knowledge videos with subtitles, storyboard and sound effects). Render without its preview server: https://github.com/HeyChengC/vibe-knowledge-film
This one is a style library, not a skill. Clone it into ~/.claude/skill-sources so you can borrow a look when I ask for motion graphics:
- mg-styles-15 (15 motion graphics styles, each with its prompt and code): https://github.com/Vincentwei1021/mg-styles-15
Then tell me what installed and what you skipped and why. Keep going with my video. New skills load the next time I start Claude Code.
STEP 3: LISTEN TO IT
1. Transcribe it with a time for every word. Save transcript.txt (with times) and transcript.srt in work.
2. Find the long pauses (over 0.6 seconds), the filler words (um, uh, you know), the false starts, and the dead time at the start and end.
3. Find the retakes. When I say the same line more than once, keep the last clean take.
4. Find the best Reel moments: complete ideas of 15 to 60 seconds that make sense on their own. For each one, find the hook, the line that would stop someone scrolling.
STEP 4: SHOW ME THE PLAN
Before cutting, show me:
- Up to 3 Reel ideas, best first: start, end, the hook line, and why it works.
- For the one you recommend, a short table of every cut: start, end, what was said, and why it goes.
- The length before and after.
Then ask me: "Make this Reel, pick another one, or cut it tighter?" Wait for my answer.
STEP 5: MAKE THE CUT
1. Start right on the hook. No intro, no "hey guys", no warm up.
2. Cut on word edges using the word times, with about 0.1 seconds of padding so no word gets clipped.
3. Add a tiny audio fade at every cut so there are no clicks or pops.
4. Keep picture and sound in sync. Re-encode so every cut lands on the exact frame.
5. Save it as work/rough-cut.mp4.
STEP 6: MAKE IT TALL
1. Make it a tall 9:16 video at 1080x1920 and 30 frames per second.
2. Look at frames from the video to find where I am. Crop so my face stays in the top two thirds of the frame. If I move, follow me smoothly.
3. If my video is already tall, keep the framing and just make sure the size is right.
STEP 7: CLEAN THE SOUND
1. Gently reduce background noise. My voice must still sound natural, never robotic.
2. Even out the volume to about -14 LUFS, the level Instagram expects.
3. Tell me in one line what changed.
STEP 8: CAPTIONS
1. Burn the captions into the video. Most people watch Reels with the sound off.
2. Make them big, bold and easy to read: 1 to 3 words at a time, timed to my voice. Use my brand font and colors if you found them, otherwise white text with a dark outline.
3. Keep them in the middle of the screen. Stay out of the bottom fifth and the right edge, where Instagram puts its buttons and caption.
4. Spell names, brands and tools the way they appear in my files. Ask me only about the ones you could not find.
STEP 9: EXPORT
Save these in exports:
1. reel.mp4: 1080x1920, under 90 seconds, ready to upload to Instagram.
2. cover.jpg: a 1080x1920 frame where my face looks most alive. Ask me if I want a short title of up to 5 words on it.
3. caption.txt: an Instagram caption with the hook as the first line, 2 or 3 short lines, a question that invites comments, and 3 to 5 hashtags.
4. captions.srt: the captions as a separate file.
Only if I ask, also make a wide 16:9 version of the full edit for YouTube.
STEP 10: CHECK YOUR WORK
Before you say you are done:
- Check the Reel: tall 1080x1920, under 90 seconds, sound present and in sync.
- Look at the frames just before and after 5 random cuts and make sure nothing jumps in a way you did not plan.
- Look at a few frames and make sure the captions are readable and stay out of the bottom fifth and the right edge.
- Make sure the captions match the words I say.
Then give me a short summary: where my files are, how much time you cut, which video skills are ready, and 2 more Reels I could make from the same recording.
STEP 11: SAVE IT AS A SKILL
Ask me if I want you to save this whole process as a Claude skill called "light-school-video-editor", with the choices I made today (caption style, crop, sound level). Then next time I can just say "make a Reel from this video".
Begin now by asking me for my video.
Step 3: Hand Claude Your Video
Claude will ask for your video. Drag the video file from your folder into the terminal window and press enter. Say yes when it asks to install the free tools and video skills.
Step 4: Approve the Plan
Claude shows you its best Reel ideas and every cut it wants to make before it touches anything. Pick one, or tell it to cut tighter. When it finishes, open the exports folder, watch your Reel, and post it with the cover and caption it made for you.
What You Learned
You turned Claude into a Reels editor with one prompt. The same pattern works for any creative job: clear working rules, a plan you approve before anything changes, and a final check before Claude says it is done. Save it as a skill and your editor is ready every time you record.
