The Temptation

Every time I build a new page or a new card for the site, there is a temptation to make it different. To try a new layout, a different icon style, a creative twist on the structure. It feels like the creative thing to do.

But I have learned that consistency is almost always the better choice for design.

What Consistency Looks Like

On Light School, every blog card follows the same layout. Same size, same structure, same icon treatment. Every campus guide uses the same template. Same heading style, same code block format, same section spacing.

This is not because we ran out of ideas. It is because sameness is a feature when it comes to design. When every card looks the same, the reader does not have to figure out what they are looking at. They already know. They saw one card, and now they understand all of them.

Where Creativity Belongs

Creativity belongs in the content, not the container. The words inside a blog post should be interesting, surprising, and original. The structure around those words should be predictable and familiar.

Think of it like books on a shelf. Every book has the same shape. Same spine, same cover size, same general format. Nobody complains that books are not creative enough in their physical design. The consistency is what makes the shelf work. The creativity is inside.

What I Broke Once

Early on, I tried making one campus card look different from the others. It had a slightly different layout and a different icon treatment. It looked fine on its own. But on the page with all the other cards, it looked like a mistake. Not creative. Just inconsistent.

I changed it back to match the rest. The page looked better immediately. Not because the original card was bad, but because it did not belong.

The Pattern

Consistency is what makes a site feel like one thing instead of a collection of pages someone built on different days. And honestly, this site was built on different days, by me, in a lot of different sessions. But you should not be able to tell. Every page should feel like it belongs to the same family.

Creativity gets attention. Consistency builds trust. For a teaching site, trust wins.
